The Werner Oechslin Library Foundation
|
At the end of 1998, the Werner Oechslin Library Foundation was established in Einsiedeln; at the beginning of 1999, the foundation signed a cooperative agreement with the ETH Zurich. This laid the ideal groundwork for the foundation's successful operation. As a small, independent, and dynamic institution, connected via the ETH Zurich to the Swiss university community, the Werner Oechslin Library aims to position itself as a recognized center of specialized competence and scholarly research. Within the focused framework of its major collections and research topics, the Werner Oechslin Library Foundation seeks to produce research outputs of international importance and impact. The library sees itself as a vivid place of intellectual exchange. Here, young participants in different academic and cultural disciplines meet more experienced colleagues, and scholars from a wide variety of cultural and linguistic regions discuss their research together. The foundation intends to make a significant contribution to culture and scholarship, especially that involving architecture, and to the situation of the humanities in general. It particularly targets the support and professional development of talented young researchers. The scholarly activities of the Werner Oechslin Library Foundation are overseen by an advisory board composed of distinguished specialists in art and architectural history, as well as cultural history in a broader sense. |
The exceptional quality of the Werner Oechslin Library has been widely noted in the scholarly community. The initiative to make this collection of sources available to the public attracted interest across the world and elicited enthusiastic responses from many prominent scholars. Institutions like the International Society for Intellectual History, which recognize the importance for contemporary research of contextual scholarship in cultural history and the history of science, have also welcomed this step.

Since signing a new cooperation agreement with the ETH Zurich in late 2009, the library bears the official name Werner Oechslin Library Foundation – a research library in cooperation with the ETH Zurich. |
